The dismissed President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and four other officials, surrendered to the Belgian police Sunday after the arrest warrant was issued by the Spanish government on charges of insurrection and incitement to rebel.
Puigmonte et al. Were wanted by the Spanish authorities for promoting the independence of Catalonia.
Other charges include abuse of public money, disobedience, and bad faith.
Two polls on Sunday showed that a few parties alone could win the local elections in December but may still not be able to re-establish the majority needed for the independence movement.
Shortly after the Spanish government took over Catalonia, Puigmonte traveled to Belgium. He and four others surrendered to the police in Brussels on Sunday morning.
Polls show that several parties that support Catalonia's stay in Spain will win about 54% of the vote.
