NAFTA Fifth Round Negotiations There Are Still "Major Disagreements" Between the

The fifth round of negotiations between the United States, Mexico and Canada over the renewal of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) ended on Tuesday. There are still many major differences to be resolved. It is doubtful whether the three parties will reach an agreement in March 2018 as planned.

The 1994 NAFTA agreement, which covers more than $ 1 trillion in annual tri-nation trade, has repeatedly called for Washington to withdraw unless it is able to re-set conditions favorable to the United States, alarming the market.

As for the series of controversial demands made by the U.S. side during the fourth round of negotiations last month, Canada and Mexico expressed their opposition and there was still no progress in the tripartite consultations in Mexico City.

"There are still major differences in some key areas ... and those proposals we can not agree at all," Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters in Ottawa.
