Zimbabwe's President Mugabe announced his resignation to end 40 years of rule

Robert Mugabe to resign as president of Zimbabwe on Tuesday. A week ago the army and his former political ally took the initiative to end his 40-year rule. Mugabe, once regarded as an independent hero in Zimbabwe, has now become a formidable tyrant.

Patrick Chinamasa, legal secretary of the ruling ZANU-PF, told Reuters that former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president of the country on Wednesday or Thursday. Prior to this, Minanga Gwa was dismissed as a trigger for the military to take over power and force Mugabe to step down.

Mr Mugabe, who is 93, still holds for a week after the military took over and Zanu-PF asked him to resign. He eventually resigned shortly after the parliamentary impeachment process began. Impeachment is considered the only legitimate way to get him out of office.

The speaker cheered enthusiastically when Speaker of Parliament Mu Munda presented Mugabe's brief resignation letter at a joint meeting of both houses of parliament. Mugabe was confined in an apartment in Harare and did not show up.
