Within hours, Britain and Ireland may reach an agreement on land boundary arrangements between the two countries after Brexit, so as to reach an agreement that will clear the way for the last obstacle to free trade negotiations between Britain and the EU.
European Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas said that British Prime Minister Teresa May and EU President Juncker may sign a border agreement on Friday morning.
"We are making progress, but we have not completely settled yet," Schinas said. "It's possible to meet in the morning (Friday)."
A spokesman for Theresa May said the Brexit negotiations are under way and a senior Irish official said the talks are progressing well and could reach an agreement within hours.
"The progress is fast now," the Irish official said at the British Irish Chamber of Commerce in Brussels. "I think we will conclude the negotiations with the British government in the coming hours, and I said for a few hours because I think we are very close."
