The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the southern New Zealand is located in the remote southern ocean on Wednesday, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.
The USGS says the focal depth is 10 km (6 miles) and is located 211 km (140 miles) west of Auckland near Antarctica, outside New Zealand's South Island.
No tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake.
